When Jessica (@mostlyathome) and her husband Jake moved into their townhouse in 2023, they were ready to put their personal stamp on the space. One of the first rooms on Jessica’s radar was the laundry, a small, underwhelming area with a cracked plastic sink and no bench space. What began as a simple refresh soon became a project that transformed daily life, especially once the couple discovered they were expecting their daughter, Sadie.
Designing with Purpose
With a growing family in mind, Jessica envisioned the laundry as a truly multifunctional space. She knew it needed a proper sink for handwashing, which later became the perfect spot to bathe newborn Sadie in those early weeks. She also wanted ample bench space to help keep on top of the endless cycle of washing. And perhaps most importantly, she liked the idea of incorporating a practical change station for their baby, allowing them to avoid cluttering other rooms downstairs or constantly trekking upstairs. In a compact home, every design decision carried extra weight, and the laundry needed to deliver both functionality and comfort.
Fortunately, Jake’s father, affectionately known as “Fix-it-Freddie”, brought Jessica’s vision to life with both skill and heart. After many conversations over coffee and croissants, the plans were drawn and her design choices started to come together.
Why Burgundy?
Jessica didn’t want the laundry to be predictable or plain. Instead, she imagined a room that would surprise people as they walked through the house, a small but impactful space filled with warmth and character. That vision led her to our Sorrento Burgundy tiles, which instantly stood out with their rich tones and depth. They not only gave the laundry its bold personality but also tied beautifully into Jessica’s love of pink-hued accents and her dream of renovating the kitchen in a similar palette one day.
“The tiles really are the hero of this space - especially with the laundry being so compact. I love pink hues and have dreams of renovating our kitchen with hints of this colourway. I felt the burgundy tiles would tie in well with the connecting kitchen and any future renovations (one day!).”
The Final Result
The finished laundry is now a space Jessica genuinely enjoys spending time in, even on the busiest days of endless washing. More than just a practical room, it’s become a place that reflects her style, makes daily life easier, and provides a touch of joy in the everyday routine. Looking back, Jessica says that if you’re renovating on a budget in a small home, the laundry is the perfect place to start. It’s often overlooked, but as her transformation proves, it can have a huge impact on both lifestyle and design.
