Located in Marrickville in Sydney’s Inner West, this bathroom renovation began with a simple challenge from homeowner Mitch (@mitchflitcroft): transform a small, tired, and cold space into something warm and full of life. From a design perspective, compact bathrooms present a great opportunity to experiment with colour and personality. Rather than trying to make the room disappear visually, the design embraces it, introducing warmth, texture, and pattern to turn a previously overlooked space into one that feels intentional and inviting.
Embracing the Terracotta Trend
Terracotta tones have made a strong comeback in interior design, bringing earthy warmth and Mediterranean-inspired character into modern homes. For this project, Mitch selected Tuscan Sand and Tuscan Clay in 150x150 porcelain tiles from Tile Lane to create a classic checkerboard floor. The pairing of these two tones delivers the perfect balance of softness and depth, while the natural variation in the tiles gives the floor an organic, sun-baked look that feels both contemporary and timeless, an ideal match for the relaxed character of Marrickville’s Inner West homes.
Colour Drenching for a Cohesive Look
To create a seamless and immersive space, the bathroom was colour drenched with carefully matched finishes. The grout, silicone, and even the ceiling paint were coordinated with the terracotta palette, allowing the tones of the tiles to flow uninterrupted throughout the room. This approach softens visual breaks and wraps the space in warmth, making the bathroom feel cohesive and thoughtfully designed despite its compact footprint.
Small Spaces, Big Impact
Projects like Mitch’s highlight how refreshing smaller rooms can completely transform the feel of a home. By layering colour, pattern, and texture, what was once a cold and underwhelming bathroom now feels vibrant, warm, and full of personality. It’s proof that even the smallest spaces, when designed with confidence, can breathe new life into a home.
